Department of History and Geography

Preparing for the coming future by pursuing studies that help develop thinking skills based on the two axes of time and space

History and geography help us analyze our activities by providing us with the axes of time and space. Aichi University’s Department of Geography and History is one of the few university departments in the Tokai region that offers opportunities for the comprehensive study of history and geography. With “Modern and Contemporary History” and “Geography” to be introduced into the high school curriculum as required subjects in 2022, teachers are now required to develop a comprehensive understanding of history and geography. In addition, a knowledge of history and geography that helps examine international relations based on the axes of time and space is essential for understanding today’s global social issues. At the college level, students should deepen their thinking by exploring themes that intrigue them and interests that inspire them. The methodologies acquired through research activities such as reading historical documents and analyzing geographic data can be applied to various aspects of life after graduation. The Department looks forward to helping more people develop flexible and creative minds by helping them study various events and phenomena that have occurred in different times and places so that they can understand the diversity of values.

3 Majors

Japanese History Study

Examining present-day Japanese society by studying the history of primarily Japan and other historically relevant regions
This major aims to help students become able to conduct specialized and independent research on the history of Japan from a broad perspective. In their sophomore year, students will be introduced to the basics through lectures and historical documents. In their junior year, they will receive specialized training, as well as other assistance, designed to help them improve their research skills so that they can produce excellent theses. In addition, a fundamental feature of this major is the importance it places on providing students with archive-based education and fieldwork opportunities to visit historical landscapes and observe archives.

World History Study

Reexamining the modern world structure and its history
Portrayals of society and its history differ depending on the provider. There is no such thing as an objective and true history acceptable by everyone. This major aims to help students reexamine the model of history we blindly accept as true by introducing them to different models of history, the origins of which have long been hidden by the word “empirical,” so that they can gain the knowledge needed to identify the intention behind this concealment.

Geography

Walking on actual ground to explore why cities and industries developed there
Geography explores the earth’s surface with the aim of discovering the laws that govern the activities of nature and humankind. This major aims to help students develop an understanding of history and culture based on investigations into the ground surface of our habitat. In Fieldwork Training, students will acquire data-gathering skills, and in Cartography, as well as other practical training classes, they will learn how to share data by diagramming it.
