Department of English Studies

Developing language skills as the key to opening our hearts to each other in today’s world as a global community comprising culturally diverse members

In today’s world of multicultural coexistence, English language skills are essential for interacting with people of other countries and regions to improve our understanding of one another. The Department of English Studies primarily aims to comprehensively help students develop their English proficiency by guiding them steadily through the process of improving their reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. The Department also aims to help students enhance their English communication skills to levels equivalent to those of their counterparts worldwide by assisting them in using what they have learned to deepen their understanding of the cultures, social norms, and perspectives of English-speaking countries. The Department has so far produced graduates who work in company overseas divisions, airlines, travel agencies, hotels, and government offices, and as schoolteachers in the Tokai region, and helped them proceed to graduate schools in Japan or overseas.

Curriculum Features

Aiming to make studying abroad in English-speaking countries more common

Encouraging active use of the Department’s One-semester Study Abroad Program
The One-semester Study Abroad Program is an intensive English learning opportunity that sends students—in either semester, spring or fall—to universities in English-speaking countries for an entire semester. This program is designed to allow students to participate relatively easily compared to the one-year certification program while also giving them more time abroad than with the short-term overseas language seminar. It sends students to Canada, the U.S., or the UK. The program offers opportunities for students to not only learn English from native speakers but also find out about other cultures and values by interacting with their counterparts overseas. The University recognizes credits students have earned while studying aboard so that they can study aboard and still graduate in four years.
