Toa Dobunshoin (later Toa Dobunshoin University) as an overseas Japanese
institution of higher education was established in Shanghai, China in 1901 for
the purpose of training people in Japanese-Chinese relations. Toa Dobunshoin
University sent out as many as 5,000 graduates by 1945, when Japan's defeat put
an end to Toa Dobunshoin University. Aichi University was established 1946 by a
number of teachers from Toa Dobunshoin. The Toa Dobunshoin University Memorial
Center was established on the Toyohashi campus in order to mark the achievements
of the research education of the Toa Dobunshoin University as forerunner of
Aichi University. The Toa Dobunshoin University Memorial Center keeps relevant
materials including the school register, original grade transcripts, and reports
on university excursions. It keeps unique information materials as well, such as
materials related to Sun Yatsen, a Chinese revolutionary and political leader,
and the Chinese Revolution, as well as those related to Yoshimasa and Junzaburo
Yamada, who were faithful friends of Sun Yatsen. These materials are permanently
exhibited in three exhibition rooms. The Memorial Center publishes periodical
magazines and booklets and holds open lecture meetings.
The Memorial Center was selected as an open research center in 2006 by the
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The Memorial
Center is developing research on the history of Aichi University as well as
